Reach the Very Top
For summiteers and ambitious hikers, Cerro Tres Kandú is an absolute must. As Paraguay's highest mountain, it offers not only a physical challenge but also an unparalleled nature experience. The path leads through dense, almost mystical Atlantic Rainforest, past giant ferns, ancient trees, and moss-covered rocks. The ascent is divided into 14 "stations" that mark the way to the summit. Once at the top, you literally stand on the roof of the country: the view from the wooden platform over the sheer endless green sea of the Ybytyruzú Reserve is arguably the most sublime moment Paraguay has to offer.
Difficulty & Accessibility
Please note: This is a strenuous sport-hike, not a casual walk.
Difficulty Level (Trekking): Hard. The ascent takes (depending on fitness) approx. 2.5 to 4 hours. The path is steep, often slippery, and requires the use of hands in some places (there are ropes and steel cables for support).
Prerequisites: Good physical condition, sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, and provisions are mandatory. We recommend starting early in the morning.
Distance from the Hotel (Vista Alegre / Campito)
Since the entry to Tres Kandú is located near the town of General Eugenio A. Garay, this is a planned day trip.
Drive: From the hotel in Vista Alegre, drive down to Melgarejo and follow the road towards General Garay.
Distance (to base camp): Approx. 30 to 35 kilometers (18-22 miles).
Driving time: Allow for about 45 to 60 minutes of driving time to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain.
